They are the same. All profiles are built from a known set of data and a
measured set of data. Each profiling application uses the colors in their
target or chart that they feel will result in the bets profile. Therefore
each application has a different number of patches in their target/chart. In
addition there are some standard ones such as the IT8.7/3.
OK, that makes sense, I figured "target" and "chart" were the same.
Now here's a follow-up question that maybe is not so simple. In the
process of making profiles for scanners (input profiles) and inkjet
printers (output profiles) I actually end up dealing with four kinds
of targets:
(a) a physical target that I scan (I got this target with my
profiling software)
(b) the scanned tiff that I make using (a) above
(c) a digitized image that I can print to my inkjet (I got this image
with my profiling software)
(d) the printed result from my inkjet using (c) above
Sometimes people just call all of these "targets", but what would be
a good way to distinguish them? The trick is that there are
different ways to categorize them:
(a) & (b) relate to input profiles, (c) & (d) relate to output profiles
(a) & (c) came with my profiling software, (b) and (d) we make ourselves
(a) & (d) are physical, (b) & (c) are digital
Does anyone have a nice set of 4 names for these targets? Everytime
we have a conversation in our office it seems like there are
misunderstandings, so I'd like to work out a simple set of names that
will make sense to most people. -Steve
