The alternate white backing tablet for the DTP41 is a ceramic plug set
in an aluminum block.
Tha basis structure is the same of course - it fits with little or no
effort - but the backer block
itself appears to be somewhat of a "whiter" white that the target white
disc in the original
block, and covers a much wider area as well.
In addition, where the original block topmost surface is slightly below
the deck of the
DTP41 base (leaving a space between the media you're measuring and the
target block
white patch or black surface), the alternate white ceramic target
actually sits above the
deck, eliminating any potential for a gap between the subject media and
target block
surface.
For my needs (display prints on a one-off basis, wide-format inkjet) I
feel the alternate
target is the proper choice; most of my media is quite opaque anyway &
the ceramic
target eliminates the need to feed a sandwich of two or more thicknesses
of media
thru the device during readings.
