Will I get better color?
Mr. Holmegaard's opinions notwithstanding (Henrik, you earned my respect
long ago), I would simply state "not much" for the type of work you do (NOT
press simulation proofing is what I gathered).
I live and breathe BestColor on an almost daily basis and I'm still
hard-pressed to come up with something, using CMYK profiles alone, that
beats a simple RGB profile thru the Epson drivers and using the correct
media settings. Yes, with CMYK profile controls and
calibration/linearization features, you'll have more control than with an
RGB profile but for strictly image proofing, the amount of work you'll put
in to achieve a CMYK profile that's even the equal of, let alone better,
than a good RGB profile is not worth the effort and expense in my opinion.
As far as calibration features and ink limiting, the Epson media settings
will get you the correct ink limits. Calibration? simply re-profile the 5500
on a regular basis. Honestly, in the time it takes to
re-calibrate/linearize, I could make a couple of RGB profiles armed with
ProfileMaker and an Eye-One.
Maybe it's just sour grapes or something but I spent literally weeks fooling
around making CMYK profiles for an Epson 5500 and as yet haven't found a
combination that bettered the straight RGB profiles I was making thru the
Mac Epson driver. For sheer lack of posterization and gray balance
crossovers, the RGB profiles were the best, hands down.
Just my $.02 worth,
Terry
