I happen to agree but Jack may jump slam you on that one (as he's done off
list towards me). I'm not sure any profile is perfect. All I want is a good
description of the RGB numbers in a file for preview and eventual
conversion. I've found most in situations, a good camera profile does this
but like many others on this list (except Jack), I've found cases where a
profile produces very ugly, posterized appearing previews (and eventual
conversions). What's odd is I can take the IDENTICAL file and run it through
different software products and get very acceptable results (so I don't
accept Jack's take that it's all in how you shoot the target. That is
important no doubt but that's not the only issues here).
Camera profiling is certainly an work in progress. Look at how long we've
had the DC target. There are many issues in dealing with that target and
I've heard rumors that another generation may be in the works.
I think the bottom line is we need some description of the RGB the camera
produces unless we except the notion that cameras should force their data
into a known space like sRGB (not good for pro's for sure, but it does allow
us to avoid custom profiling to some degree unlike a camera that produces
unknown RGB). Nikon and Canon have attempted to funnel the eventual RGB data
into such known spaces (at this time either sRGB or Adobe RGB) but often
don't allow us to get to the raw data. I'm not convinced that the cameras
really shoot into an exact condition such as Adobe RGB but at least I can
tag the data with that space and get a reasonable preview. That's better
than what we got from Nikon off the D1 a few years ago.
