Andrew has described his method of assigning a working space profile to a
camera image, and then adjusting the parameters of the working space
definition in such a way as to produce a better "interpretation" of the
image. Apparently, he has had some success with this technique.
A while back I made a spreadsheet that may be helpful to those wishing to
follow this lead. If you take a picture of a standard ColorChecker chart,
pull out the RGB values of the 24 patches, and then place them into the
spreadsheet, it will tell you which of about a dozen standard working spaces
is the closest fit. This will give you a bit of a head start in implementing
Andrew's method, since you will at least be starting with a working space
that is in the ballpark. The spreadsheet may be found at

"ColorChecker RGB Summaries and Spreadsheets."
There are actually two spreadsheets, one that finds the closest fit in RGB
space, the other in Lab space. I would recommend using the latter.
