Yes, but it looks pretty fugly after being converted to ProPhoto too.
That's what I meant. So you get an ugly high bit file in ProPhoto and make
it look good. OK. The other idea was to simply make it look good in the host
software and assign the display profile. But I can see how this would
severely limit the gamut possibilities using a display space as the
assumption about the file.
For those unfortunate few that can't get high bit out of their scanners, can
I assume your ProPhoto technique would not be advisable? In this case,
tagging a good looking file with the display profile (or perhaps a profile
that's close like ColorMatch RGB) would be the way to go.

Yup. Plus there have been some discussions recently about the original 848
profile that clipped the ends when used with Auto. Scanning flat in high bit
was the solution. I have found that setting the Auto preferences to be very,
very flat can work too. You need to enter a pretty decent negative number in
both fields. The software tries to gray balance either end without clipping
what so ever. Again, would save you about 5 seconds of work in Photoshop.

Ah, glad you got your hands on one. I found it a very useful target indeed.
FYI, someone mentioned to me that the one case where users should ask PMP
for the "Large" profile option is when making scanner profiles. I haven't
tested this but perhaps Don or others have a comment. I've asked
GretagMacbeth when and why to use this one option but never got a good
answer.
