If the profile loses it's type and creator codes then ColorSync will ignore it.
There is a free utility here:

that users can drag the profile onto to fix it. (my English prof just cringed at that sentence)
Apple's Profile First Aid will do a more comprehensive check.
Our ColorThink software will do the code fixing and add more tests still, so you have a few options.
