You are looking for a proofing paper without optical brighteners... rumor has
it the Europe is full of them. <G>

It has to do with the fixed (and very steep) black generation of the RGB
Epson drivers for their dye inkjets... if you look at the newer pigment 5500
you will see that the fixed black generation is now entirely different; not
specificly to fix this shadow banding issue, but to reduce light source
induced color shifting (aka metamerism) in the prints. Get a true CMYK
PostScript RIP (*not* the Epson RIP) and you will have control of this
yourself.
