Rick:
Don't hold your breath waiting for a miracle profile for scanning color negs.
I doubt that any of the canned, off the shelf profiles will ever work for
color neg film, given the different curve shapes of the various films. A neg
profile might work ok on a series of negatives which are all shot under the
same conditions, such as a wedding photographer, or prom photography which
might have a hundred or more exposures that are alike. The built in masking
varies between each brand and type of film, which complicates matters qjite a
lot.
Many of the amatuer emulsions, such as Kodacolor, have a bump in the red
curve around flesh tone densities, to render people a bit warmer.
Professional films, like Fuji NPL and NPS, Kodak Professional Supra, etc
have curves that are intended to produce accurate colors, such as required in
product photography. Scanning negs with unknown colors, such as a sunset or
through a microscope, pose their own challenges, and the final color balance
often is up to the scanning operator to second guess the client.
We've had the best luck training color printing technicians, who are
accustomed to color corrections, to do scanning on negative film.
Regards,
Wiley
