Imagine when you go to lecture on color management and you want to show off
a nice product and can't because the damn software will only run on the
machine 1000 miles away. Of you take the software on your Powerbook but find
you need to use a desktop machine to do a presentation. Or you want to demo
the software to a customer... You get the idea. A dongle is awful but far
more convenient (even with all the silly extensions that you need these
days... Anyone seeing how much fun it is to switch between Monaco Profiler
and Proof with two different dongles and two different USB extensions. What
where they thinking?).
At one point, I had a great system to replace all dongles. A customer would
prick his/her finger and send a sample of blood to the company who would
code a small device with users DNA. Now whenever one wanted to run the
software, user would only need to draw some blood to boot the application.
It's better than Matchlock... <g>.
