I've been following this thread, as I've been looking at ways to protect our
own software. I can't believe so many people prefer dongles. Most of our
users hate dongles. They get lost, broken, have incompatibilities and just
waste USB slots. In fact my ColorBlind dongle with iMate causes my CD tray
to eject when starting up. Besides, would you rather wait several days for a
dongle to be shipped out to you, than be able to use the software right
there and then.
The Matchlock system works. It stopped me copying ICC Display to another
machine. The only improvement I would suggest would be for the software to
connect directly to a server with your key, and automatically unlock,
instead of having to manually type the key into an email and wait for a
reply.
As a developer, it's a real pain to have to go back after writing a piece of
software and implement systems to stop people pirating it. A system like
Matchlock involves writing no code at all. It just wraps around your
application. It saves an enormous amount of development time, and it works.
BTW: Please contact me off list if anyone knows of a really good system to
protect software. It seems almost impossible to distribute fully function
demos with an unlocking mechanism.
