The software that runs my internet gateway works this way (any of the
products from Sustainable Softworks) and I find it MUCH more convenient than
a dongle. This method provides them a bit more security and product use
tracking than a simple serial number. I've moved the software onto a
variety of machines while I test configurations and its always been a simple
process. However, their software defaults to a fully functional time
limited demo mode if for some reason you can't complete the unlock process
(don't have the code handy, internet connection down, etc). That way the
unlocking process won't prevent you from doing something you need
immediately, but it also won't allow you to use the product for more than a
few days if you don't complete the unlocking process properly. While
internet connections are common these days, its one thing to require
networking software to connect to a server for validation and quite another
to do so with color profiling software. I'd think you'd have to allow some
sort of fallback demo mode for the user that couldn't immediately connect
for whatever reason.
