The Mac doesn't have to be on the network. It just needs an ethernet card,
which every Mac has had for the last 5+ years. You're probably right though
I may not want to rely on this.

That's OK for software that the user will probably have open all day. But
for software like ProfileCity's, or our software, they will only have it
open for a short period of time. So looking across the network is not that
useful. Besides, people have written lots of extensions that stop software
doing that. Although most are application specific.

Agreed. I hate having to put these mechanisms in place. Unfortunately, even
large organizations with millions of dollars will still pirate software if
its too easy to do so. Many users don't have a problem paying for software,
but if its easier to grab a serial off the web than pay for it, they will.
Mangers can only control so much. Its impossible do software audits often
enough to track which employees are pirating. It really is a losing battle.
For a small company like ours, losing a hundred sales isn't something we can
justify. And if you start charging more to cover those losses, users will
just find a way to live without your software. So far all of our products
have been network/comms products or had comms built-in. Users had to have an
account to user it. However, we have a new product coming out which isn't an
online product, so we need to find another way to stop piracy. We just have
to figure out how to make it user friendly.
