Daniel,
The last time I heard of an ICC application creating grayscale scanner or
printer profiles was before Photoshop 6 was released (say about two years
ago). And while I have not actually seen a third party profiling app for
grayscale that works, there is supposed to be one or two (and I have looked
I pretty hard for them. Actually I am skeptical that third party grayscale
grayscale scanner or printer profiles really exist, except for Photoshop.
If there are 3rh party gray scale apps like this I hope someone or a vendor
will mention it.
One option for scanning grayscale images (positives) is to scan it as RGB,
then it is strait forward to use RGB profiles. As for grayscale printer
profiles, Photoshop allows you to create them via the Color
Settings/Gray/Custom Dot Gain.
In this part of the PS Color Settings you can create custom gray printer
profiles. Also, there is no licensing issue.
To create one, you can print out a target that you create with halftone dot
values from the 13 steps. Then measure the printout with a densitometer or
comparable tool (such as a Digital Swatch Book with Color Shop) to get
halftone dot values. Accuracy is important. Take the halftone dot values
from the print and enter them in the 13 steps and then save the gray
profile.
As for scanning B&W negs, I have done it but not with profiles. I scanned
then as positives and then Inverted them. Not a great method but with a
little elbow grease and going by the numbers, it can work.
