Gerhard, PrintOpen 3.0 probably isn't up to task here. There are much newer
version of the software that perform better than 3.0 so that may be one of the
limiting factors. Also, the Epson driver isn't going to be easy to grey
balance no matter what. The biggest problem for B+W output (using the Epson
driver) is that you will have to use the yellow ink in the B+W prints. In
other words, you are creating an RGB output profile to use for B+W output, the
only problem is that the grey balance will be corrected by all sorts of colors
including yellow. This will give you real nice metamerism because the yellow
inks go nuts under different lighting condidtions. So you'll get a good grey
balance under a D50 viewing booth ( and the profiler is working with D50 as
well if its using LAB data), the problem is that people don't display their
prints in $1000 D50 viewing booths. The PMP 4.1 and spectrolino would work a
lot better than your current combo for these printers. Monaco profiler 4.5 is
also very good, but is still dealing with LAB data so you won't get quite the
flexibility of working with spectral data that PMP4.1 can ( and the Colorbyte
profiler has been using for a long time).
The best B+W output for the new Ultrachrome Epson printers so far has
resulted from using ImagePrint. I know that there is a 2200 version due to hit
the streets for $495, and it includes proprietary B+W profiles for many
medias. The profiles use the black and light black inks, and mix in small
portions of light cyan and light magenta, leaving yellow out entirely. There
is also an option to tone the image in the software using the "tint picker",
essentially an area 5 delta e from neutral that you have to play with an
introduce a some slight toning effects. Nothing as heavy as sepia, but very
nice, and the shadows and highlights are taken care of properly (still
neutral). I have an Epson 1280 runnnig MIS full spectrum quad blacks and
ImagePrint 5 and the prints are at least as good as the piezography plug-in,
and a hell of lot better usability and speed. The 7600 with the Tint picker is
amazing and I see no reason to think the the 2200 version will be any
different. That should tell you something about the actual print quality
itself under scrutiny. If you are serious about B+W,ImagePrint may be hard to
beat in your case, investing in a new profiler ( a capable one) will cost many
times the price of ImagePrint and you'll still be trying to work thru the
Epson driver.
