Maybe I should first ask: do I need a RIP with the new Epson 7600 /
9600? I have the tools for making custom printer profiles, but I don't
know if the new Epson drivers will allow making good profiles and using
them at their best.
Now, Ilford offers packages with either of the two Epson and a RIP
called Ripstar v. 5.6.1 (I think it's a version of Onyx Postershop)
bundled with a PC station, paper batch bar-code reader, for what seems
to me a good price. Problem is I have no feedback on this system and
don't know if I should buy the printer alone and use it straight from my
Mac or maybe with another RIP. All I need is *excellent* image quality
with the pigmented inks, with no banding, neutral grays and smooth
gradation. Speed is secondary. Is there also some experience with
Ilford's papers? As far as I understand, there are two kinds, resin
coated and nanoporous ceramic coated. The first is more permanent but
the second dries quicker. If someone has experience or got some feedback
on the Ilford system, I would be very interested to read! Thanks!
