A question of cmyk preview rendering.
I have been lurking in the shadows of this list for some years now but the
last year I have been of and on due to changing works a couple of times,
but now I am back again.
This is way this question might have been covered before but I missed it.
I am presently working on a small tabloid newspaper picture desk, we are
printing with a another newspaper in the same town and we are being
provided with their output profile. The photographers here are are working
the picture themselfes and are also cmyk converting themselfes manually in
photoshop. We are looking at making this automatic through using
Fotostation Colorfactory with its Index Manager running on server level and
hopefully only working the images to a good rgb and let rgb->cmyk
sharpening and possibly resizing be done in this software. We are also
looking at upgrade our photoshop to 7 from our 5.5. We kept of this since
we where not happy with the cmyk preview both as softproof and after
conversion in 6 that differed substansially from 5.5, at least using these
cmyk profiles. These profiles are very good and the guy creating these has
lectured with IFRA and does a very good job in the colormanagment of this
print shop/newspaper where our paper is being printed. This mans advice to
us has been to work our pictures in rgb/rgb and dont try to work the
pictures after the cmyk or in rgb/cmyk preview. Ofcourse we have different
objectives since our paper is a tabloid and we are using our images in
large sizes and the photographers wish to remain in control of their
pictures quality. This leads us into the problem of the preview, in 5.5 we
are having a reasonably accurate preview of what our print looks using the
output profile but in 6 & 7 the sauration is very high and a number of
problems occur (I am including a link to the download of the profile if you
would like to have a look) (

Please do remember that this is a webpress and for newsprint and not a
sheetfed magazine print. We are trying to using paper white simulation and
it corresponds reasonably well in shadows areas but our highlights and
midrange is totally out. In PS6 this is more grave then it is in 7 but the
difference is not enough for us to be able to make the transition to 7. We
also tried Photoretouch Pro from Binuscan and the result where mixed but
did not make us wanna move over to that software considering it's lack of
features compared with Photoshop.
To put it simply we are in the dark since it seems that we would have to
stay with PS 5.5 to keep our previews but at the same time OSX is tempting
(we are still in classic) and there are features in both 6 and 7 that we
would like to use.
Can someone explain the difference between the way PS 5.5 and prevoius
renders the cmyk image preview file and the way 6/7 does it and how we can
master this situation. If anybody could point us in the right direction or
help us out in any other way I would be very gratefull.
