Do you have Photocal or Optical? And are you saying that it works great for
you? What gamma and white point do you choose? And what colour space as a
starting point? On the 17inch you hav to have a colour space as a starting
point and the default of the monitor is recommended which I believe is Apple
Studio Display. What settings do you have in Color Sync??
I'm doing quite a lot of house calls to photographers to help them
out setting up their digital equipment recently. When I've been using
the Spyders that most of the photographers have bought, the results
have been very mixed. Sometimes I'm able to come up with a monitor
that seems to be OK, but most of the time the results are insecure.
Many times the results have changed quite a lot when I reprofiled the
monitors.
I decided to make a test to see why. I used 4 different Spyders, two
new ones and two a little older. I've profiled one CRT monitor and
none of the Spyders produced the same results. Then I tried a LCD
monitor, the Eizo Flexscan L685EX, which is the best LCD monitor I've
been working with. But the results profiling the LCD monitors were
even more disappointing. Colors changed even more when I tried the
different profiles made on the LCD monitor.
One of the major problem seems to be the lack of low light
sensitivity. It's almost impossible to get a good reading when you
are setting the black point luminosity. With most of the Spyders I
got no reading at all, then suddenly the readout in Optical jumped to
a reading of .8 cd/m2 or even higher.
I had none of this problems using Optical and DTP92 on the CRT. As
the DTP92 can't read a LCD monitor, I used the EyeOne and ICCDisplay
on the Eizo. This two combinations produced the same results over and
over again, something I wasn't able to do with the Spyders I was
using.
