I was surprised when I graphed some scanner profiles recently. I have
made profiles with the HCT target using ICC CapturePro. As far as I can
judge from my limited knowledge, the resulting scans have good colors.
They usually just need some contrast adjustments to have the original's
colors. But my surprise was to see that when graphed in ColorThink, the
profiles created with ICCPro seem narrow. They cover the full width of
the spectrum, but are limited in height. On the graph, they draw a near
perfect triangle starting from X70, reaching Y60-X38, following the full
gamut line down to Y38-X67 and back to X70 (I have a GIF, or can send
the profile if someone wants to check it!). The boxed Eversmart profile
being much wider, fully encompassing Don RGB or Ektaspace, I wonder if
my custom profiles are right?
Another question is about work/storage space. Although I am not yet
equipped, I have also graphed some new profiles made by Bill Atkinson
for the Epson 9600 Ultrachrome inks. The graph shows that the printer
profile (Premium Glossy) has a very wide gamut especially in the green
spectrum and overlaps both Ektachrome Space and Best RGB. It overlaps
slightly Wide Gamut RGB and only the extremely wide Kodak ProPhoto
profile fully encompasses the printer profile. In real world usage, does
it mean that I might loose something if I keep scanning in Ektachrome
Space or Best RGB, or is the Ultrachrome spectrum simply never fully
found on "normal" Velvias or Ektas?
And how about Profoto, is it worth using as work space if the files are
8 bit RGB? (The scanner runs 14 bit but internal but files are 8 bit).
Thank you for your help!
Best regards,
Paul Schilliger
