Attempting to profile- PhotoPrint or Roland Colorchoice is a nightmare and
almost impossible.
In defense of Scanvec-Amiable, when they were the first to go down the road
of 6 Hexachrome & 8 Color Hexachrome because of Roland's Colorchoice ---
they had nothing to build profiles with. Were talking over 4 years ago and
we are just see 6,7,8 Color profile software this year. Scanvec-Amiable has
there own profile software called Colorcal.
The problem is that they put there ink limits, density linerazation, paper
feed data into the header of the profile that is used by the rip.
I have a cash offer to any programmer that can make a utility to either put
header data into a Gretag/Monaco profiles or Put the Gretag/Monaco icc
profile part into a Scanvec profile.
Here is why you will have a nightmare (This info is pieced together from
various Scanvec programmers - so don't kill me if its not 100% correct -
I've only verified some of them)
1) If you disable color management to make a profile - you will print with 4
color CMYK only. Hard to profile 6 to 8 inks when you only print with 4
2) You cannot profile RGB - rip won't take it - plus you don't get the other
inks when color management is off - and there is no default transformation
(see #5)
3) You can't set the ink channel limits when you print a target
4) Printing CMYKlclm will allow a 4 channel profile to be load - Printing
CMYKOG must have a 6 channel profile, Printing CMYKlcLmOG must have an 8
channel profile
5) Messing with other setting causes the rip/color engine to behave very
strange -usually opposite of what you think.
6) They are CMYK rips that use UCR for lack of a better term to get Black,
Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Orange, Green. Just do UCR with a different
color a few times.
7) Channels 5-8 use the black channel(Kmask.dat) in CPSI rip for certain
info
Scanvec-Amiable had a lot of good theories for 6 & 8 channels when they had
very little to work with. Its a whole new world and their stuck with a lot
of old code.
I have ways around a lot of the issues, but its one of those 1200 hour
projects. Hope this helps anyone trying to profile.
