There is some controversy and grumbling about this. What Maximize
Compatibility does is save a version of the file that is flattened
and attached to the unflattened file for importing into InDesign or
Illustrator etc. Basically it is two files in one. One for Photoshop
editing and one for design application placement.
It was there since Photoshop 6 (maybe before) but now they changed
the language from backward compatibility to future compatibility.
What does that imply or mean? I have hear this suggested: Adobe may
change the way the layers are blended together. I believe that if
they do that they should consider it a new file format or allow
honoring of the old blending methods.
I used to scan & store my images in 8 bit RGB mode with adjustment
layers and it became a hassle to click through that dialogue. Then I
started scanning & storing in high bit RGB and storing as TIFF so the
problem went away for me. Now how should I best compress & store
these 120 MB tiff files...

Hi All,
Could you please comment on the new file format options proposed in PS
7.0 ?
In Photoshop 6.1, when I saved a scanner TIFF file after editing it with
layers, it was automatically saved in Photoshop format. Now, in PS7, the
default file format is TIFF multilayer, which I think is a new format.
If I chose to save in Photoshop format, I have an option box for
maximizing the compatibility. When unchecked, this option saves a lot of
disk space for the files are approximately half the size, but there is a
warning that the files might not be compatible with future versions of
Photoshop. I understand that this Photoshop lean format does not include
a composite image and therefore cannot be opened by other softwares.
Other than that, does it lose any information or cause any degradation
to the image? Is there a possibility to set this lean format as default
w/o having to answer all the option boxes? Thanks!
