The latest version of Wasatch SoftRIP (which has always controlled these
devices as CMYK as opposed to RGB) introduces an optional extra step
between the CMS output and the device calibration curves
(linearization). The call it "separation rule" and it gives you fairly
sophisticated ink limit and black generation options (as an alternative,
or in addition, to having these built into the profile), as well as
several options for Orange and Green generation. Also, it affords a
choice of treating the resulting "virtual device" (separation rule +
linearization + device and media characteristics) as an RGB device or a
CMYK device.
Light ink control had already been a set of individual sliders to set
(to oversimplify) the point where the full inks "kick in".
I have only had my hands on this version 4.5 for about a week, but my
hunch is that for CcMmYK devices, my traditional workflow with ink
limits and black generation built into CMYK profiles will continue to be
preferred, but for a CcMmYKOG device like the Roland, it will pay to use
the RIP's black generation and ink limit controls, and probably even
declare it an RGB device. I shall experiment with the multiple options
to configure such a device shortly.
The reason for this lies in the difficulty of profiling such a printer
in the "ordinary" way. Wasatch says (semi-confidentially) that both they
and Monaco (Marc Levine) are testing n-channel profile support with
Monaco profiles. Gretag apparently haven't been very forthcoming yet in
providing the necesary cooperation, which is a bit of a pisser for
somebody like me who has just bought the iProfile Pro bundle (PM 4.1 +
iQueue 140 + SpectroScan T). Of course, I *would* have to fork out a lot
of additional money for the multichannel support in Gretag...
