I am experimenting with creating a 'film camera profile' in my
digital workflow for my photographer friend's camera and film
combination.
Film targets at
http://www.GrafixGear.Com include gradation
information. That is they have a text file of target values for Dmin,
Mid Gray, and Dmax. These RGB values can be used to create your
transparency calibrations.
Using the same concept (and adding a bit of zone system), process out
fogged film for Dmax, unexposed film for Dmin and set your mid gray
of 128s on a density of around .74
I have a linear Film Gamut working space which will help you to
contain the contrast using this paradigm. The family of spaces is
also useful for handling saturation issues with trans to print
conversions.
Question 2 - digital camera targets?
Some pictorial black and white films can record a10-14 stop exposure
range. This correspond to a scene brightness range of about 1:1000
to about 1:16,000. I
would not normally expect a reflection camera target (e.g. Macbeth
color chart) to cover this wide a brightness range.
- Are there alternative ICC digital camera profiling targets,
methods or 'work-arounds' that would help solve profiling
camera/film combinations that can
capture these sort of scene brightness ranges?
(P.S I am using ColorSynergy4.5 for the profiling the B/W inkJet.)
Go to
http://www.basiccolor.de/ and look at their dcam software. Used
in combination with their camera target, you should be able to
achieve the max brightness range. This combo was used to capture the
26 stop range of the Spheron camera.

By the way, a clever guy named Ansel was a believer in Zones 0-9 (=10
stops). Is there a new system for 14 stops?
