To handle these devices, you really need a large-aperture instrument -- the dots are just too big for a normal aperture to reliably capture the right ratio of ink dot and paper white.

With an xy instrument like the Spectroscan, you can get around it by taking zillions of measurements and averaging them, but there's really no way to do this reliably with a stripreader or a handheld, and even with the Spectroscan it's a kludge at best.

Something like a Spectrolino8mm, or one of the large-aperture Minolta instruments, is really the best tool for this job.
