Tips on Profiling Epson 5500

I've spent a bunch of time profiling and implementing a workflow for an Epson 5500 with the Fiery Spark Designer RIP running on an eMac as a RIP server. There are some limitations that took me some time to discover. It would be nice if someone from Epson would comment. :-)

A custom output profile can be loaded into the RIP, and supposedly, the user can select any profile right from the print dialog as long as you specify them as "Output-1, Output-2," etc in the RIP. WRONG! This works for Epson created profiles only. I have no idea why, but when attempting this with custom profiles, Fiery Spark would use whatever output profile was designated as the default. My custom profiles worked fine as a default profile--but could not be used as an alternative. One thing I didn't try was to rename my profiles to the same name as Epson's. The annoying thing is there is no warning, no error message, etc. The RIP just makes the decision to ignore the custom profile and use the default.

The good news is that the provided profiles are pretty good if you use the paper they are made for. I made an output comparison using one of Epson's vs one of mine for the same paper and could barely tell a difference.

Another word on defaults. If you just send a file to the RIP with no changes to the printer specific options, you get major dithering and the smallest gamut you've ever seen--kind of like you left the print out in the rain for a couple of years past the archival rating. :-) It's necessary to have the user select a paper stock setting with the word "Fine" in order to get decent looking output. A setting that has "720 X 1440 fine" works well. There is no way to change this default in the Fiery Spark.
