Tom,
I don't know how quickly they deteriorate, but as I recall it had something to do with the
heat of the element breaking down the 'filter'. With the fluorescent lights (excitable?)
phosphors are used and don't deteriorate as quickly.

But to be sure, I hope CD Tobie jumps in here soon, as he really has the working knowledge
that I just mimic. ;-)
