If National Geographic uses 3400k for viewing *and* matching, does that
mean that they are essentially out of the ICC loop? Which uses a
reference illuminant of D50 in the PCS?
It is quite common for larger companies to have different standards for
viewing their work, depending on what they want the end result to look
like.
We have one client that insists on carrying his press sheets outside
to view
under sunlight... a bit strange but OK I guess.
National Geographic uses a 3400k view source that they supply (for a
fee)
to their service bureaus and printers. The transparency view box,
projects
the 35's and 2 1/4's with a 3400 source light and projects it onto a
ground
glass at actual reproduction size. The overhead lights are also at
3400 and
this is where proofs and press sheets are viewed. They have about a
dozen of
these set-ups at their home office in DC. All neat and tidy where
everyone
sees the same thing, no matter where their project is being worked on.
