If one does have a high end calibration / profiling kit like Spectrolino /
Profilemaker 4.1 / SpectroscanT table, is one able to make proper CMYK
profiles for this Rip if one is using third party inks and papers for which
there are no profiles included by Colorbyte?
Knock yourself out, profile CMYK or RGB whatever you like. The RGB is pretty
bulletproof because you don't have to deal with the black generation, but CMYK
is profiled the exact same way in this RIP, simply turn off color management
and print the targets. Profile for papers that are not already supported by
the RIP, or in my case I profile every paper I use so that it is dialed in
100%. Generally I don't use the included profiles with a few exceptions even
if they do work ok. Most of the time I build a few profiles for the same
media/ink combo using different profiling packages just so that I have a few
to choose from at print time. If you are running a Epson 7000 for example with
say Gen4 inks, you will need a custom recipe as it is doubtful that you will
get good results because each recipe is built for a specific inkset.
ImagePrint for the Epson 7000 supports the Epson PhotoDye, Cone Piezography,
MIS FS Quad Blacks, and Lyson Quad Blacks. All of these are specific recipies
and Colorbyte has a profiler that generates ICC greyscale profiles so that is
how they handle B+W. You'll have to talk to the guys at Colorbyte about the
cost of generating a recipe, I know that it is time consuming, and that time
is money, but I don't know what they charge for the service.
