Profile Gamut vs. Printer gamut

I am trying to match some supplied color swatches on my inkjet printer.
I know that the swatches are within the printable gamut of the machine,
but when I look at the gamut of the profile, the swatches are not
within the profile's gamut.
I am looking for a way to expand the profile's gamut to use more of the
machines color gamut. I am losing some of the color fidelity of the
machine because of this. I am using Profile City for my profile
generation.
I have also used Monaco for profile creation and I know that Monaco has
the ability to generate output profiles in different rendering intents.
Would that make any difference?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike,
The setting that you're referring to in your Monaco software creates a
default rendering intent preference in your profile. That rendering intent
will be selected automatically in ICC-aware applications when your make your
conversion. Choosing a preferred rendering intent when you build the profile
does not have any effect on _how_ the profile is built, however, nor does it
affect the accuracy of the profile. You can override that preference anytime
you perform a conversion by choosing a different rendering intent in your
conversion options.
That being said, choosing a different rendering intent can make a big
difference when colors are remapped to your printer space. There are dozens
of variables that could be limiting the capability of your profile, from the
settings used to print your patches to the behavior of your printer in its
current operating state. If you believe you output the patches correctly and
are sure that you're performing the conversion properly, perhaps you would
benefit from a profiling package that generates a larger number of patches.
In most cases a larger number of patches will result in a more accurate
profile.
Cheers,
Michael Roberts
