"A dongle, a serial number and a Matchphrase. This company seems to
have a
copy protection identity crisis."
One has to wonder going forward, how will software companies make a
profit and continue to create new and better products without
protecting their intellectual property. When one buys a PC one has to
go online and register the copy of WindowsXP to get full functionality.
Does Microsoft have a copy protection identity crisis? Is not being
able to buy one copy of software and put it on several boxes one owns a
pain? Yes it is. Is it a fair use from a software makers point of view?
Probably not. Having worked with matchphrases and dongles, I prefer
dongles. I believe in a previous post to this list, complaints were
made about the non portability of matchphrases and Profile City
software. I believe the suite and dongle characteristics of BasicColor
now solves that issue. As a consultant, you can now do all your stuff
at a clients shop with "your" software that was licensed to you. Your
dongle gives you that ability. If for some chance you forget to wipe
the software off your client's computer, he has no way to activate and
use the software.
This discussion is part of the larger question of how does one get
compensated for their intellectual property.
The same issues apply for photography, music, and software design. With
the advance of computers and digital technology in all aspects of the
creative process, new business models and practices need to be
developed. I would imagine that if a software maker charged an
"unlimited use" type price for their software, few of us could afford
it. As a photographer, I want to get fair use payments for the images I
create. That is how I stay in business. Dongles, serial numbers, and
matchphrases are business tools that software designers need to
implement to maintain a viable ongoing business. Perhaps some on the
list would discuss how this issue would could be solved to the benefit
of both software users and makers.
