This is a topic that should be addressed correctly ,yet to date , little
quantified or un-biased information has been put before us.
There are a lot of variables yet it can be done and does work for those who
succeed in finding the appropriate combination of kit. The other side of the
coin is the notion that a CCD only has a response to a scenes light and
properties of that light which of course would be unique to that particular
photo. When you make a scanner profile you profile the hardware (somewhat
the assumed software behind) and the actual IT8 or other chart. The scanner
has only an idea of the total package , thus your more or less profiling the
IT8 and the way it is seen. Take another film such as Polaroid or an offset
page and this same profile will fail miserably. Same holds true for
digicams. You can only assume so much about the captor, it's response, and
the actual scene. In controlled conditions the variables are held within
tight tolerances so camera profiling can work well. Outside of tight
tolerances though and creating a pleasing scenes can be risky using profiles
with blind faith. That's where Adobe Camera Raw comes in and does a good job
at helping you decide visually how the image should be rendered.
Who knows maybe the developers should look at new methods of "camera
profiling>.
