They are a special type of pigment inks called "encapsulated pigments" but
its really a polymer vehicle that coats the particles that the name refers
to. The latest and greatest of them (the UltraChromes used in the 2200, 7600,
9600, and without the gray ink in the 10,600) are quite brilliant, though, in
consequence, a bit lacking in subtlty. For many uses they are the best choice
currently on the market
