- Thread-topic: Very Basic Questions
First, let me preface this by acknowledging that I'm a rank amateur
(photographer) just looking for a sanity check before getting too much
deeper into this.
Last November I spent my wad purchasing a G4, Photoshop 7, Lacie 22"
monitor, Epson 2200, and a Nikon 4000 scanner (it still hurts). This
was a gamble on my part as I'm essentially a (barely) functional idiot
with this stuff (but like all animals I have my dreams).
Anyway, since early December I've been scanning slides into Adobe RGB
(1998), doing my (limited) Photoshop thing, and then printing from the
"source" space into the appropriate Epson space ("destination") with
"Color Management" off (Print with Preview etc.). Other then when
printing I believe that ColorSync has been functional using the canned
monitor profile, and up to just recently the colors I see on the monitor
have been essentially the same as I see on the Epson prints (to my eye
at least). In addition, the few times I've had silver-halide prints
made from the same files (Fuji Frontier on Crystal Archive) they've
matched as well (color-wise).
Unfortunately, over the last week or so I've noticed increasing
differences between what the monitor shows and what I see on the Epson
prints, and a significant shift manifested between my last two sessions
(whereas previous differences I'd characterize more as drift). At this
point the differences clearly manifest on the monitor when I generate a
soft proof in the Epson space.
From what I've been reading it's clear (I think) that I was extremely
lucky that things worked so well for about 4 months (I can only get 2-3h
at a time, and I'd estimate that the monitor has been on at most 70
hours). However, before spending more $ on this my wife requires that
someone who knows something tells me what to do (as an alternative to
taking her advice, which I won't repeat).
Questions:
Does the apparent step-shift signify something besides drift in monitor
profile or is a step consistent with normal behavior?
If I buy the Lacie hardware/software and update my monitor profile will
this be sufficient to get me back on track (at least temporarily)? Does
this stuff "work" in OS.X?
Finally, I'm curious how the gamut of the laser-silver halide systems
(Fuji Frontier, Light Jet) compare to the Epson paper gamuts. I'm
hoping that since we're still talking about silver-halide prints &
additive color that they have a wider gamut that the pseudo RGB gamut of
the Epson ink-jet.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Already Appreciative Jeff
