Name Color Callouts require that the color be... er, named, so it does not
relate to pixel based colors, but only PostScript definitions of colors for
vector uses. A proper usage would be for a RIP or Color Server to intercept a
PostScript or PDF file with a font or other graphic area defined as Pantone
393, and instead of using the canned color definition of that color in RGB or
CMYK from the source, to trash those values and replace them with the
licensed Lab values (from Pantone in this instance) for that color, in
relation to the device profile. This allows defined SWOP and other color
values in a file to be proofed to devices that do not get the same results
from the those fixed colors, with the choice of emulating them to gamut
limits of the proofing device (to emulate using actual Pantone ink in an
extra tower) or to the press gamut (to emulate Pantone-to-process
conversions).
This is a complex area restricted to PostScript, advanced RIPs, and Color
Servers. Since it happens blind on the fly, it needs to be carefully tested
with all file types that may be encountered before being implemented into a
proofing (or printing) workflow. One test is to replace the CMYK values of a
Named Color Callout with completely different values. Then, if the bogus CMYK
values are used, your Pantone Yellow will print purple, and if the Named
Colors are successfully converted via the Named Color Profile, the color will
be correct.
