Both RGB and CMYK simulation are turned off within the RIP. I was surprised that an RGB profile would be what worked, but it seems to be, and I'm suddenly very happy with the results (the same colors I get printing directly out of Photoshop, with no more weird posterization going into the blacks). I'll run more tests today to confirm my theory, but that was my Eureka moment for yesterday.
The thing with any RIP profiling is to determine if you are able to turn off the processing that occurs when sending CMYK through the RIP. There's a test file in our profiling kit if anyone needs it but it is typically just a matter of sending a K gradient and then examining it to see if there is black ink only or if it went 4 color.
When you tell profiling software that it has control over the K channel it believes you. If you lied, then the results do not turn out well in most cases. The only thing we can do is revert to RGB (CMY) control over the printer and let the black float as it will.... that and kick RIP vendors's butts whenever we see them at trade shows for not supporting ICC workflows.
As far as I am concerned supporting an ICC workflow means allowing the user to turn off all color management for target printing. NOT just allowing ICC simulation profiles to be downloaded. This rules out some RIPs made/sold by EFI/Fiery, Epson, Xerox/Tektronix and others...

Steve
