Sharon,
You really need to calibrate your monitor - ANY monitor. It seems that
you've made the assumption that your 6 year old monitor cannot be
calibrated - this may not be true. Unless you go with the excellent,
but expensive Sony Artisan (about $1700) that includes a calibrator and
software, you should consider starting with a calibrator and software
package and your existing monitor. If you can't calibrate your
monitor, then you'll need to replace it. Even if your printers aren't
using profiles, you don't want to be sending out files that you have
visually "tuned" to an uncalibrated monitor. (Picture a cheap old TV in
a cheap motel...) Just because a monitor is new and is CAPABLE of
being calibrated doesn't mean that it will arrive in anything
resembling a calibrated state, nor would it stay there if it was. The
calibration hardware/software is the only way that you have to make
sure that if someone brings up your images on a calibrated system that
they will see exactly what you intended them to see. In fact, you
might not even see the same image if you open your own files from a
year ago, since your monitor is probably not in exactly the same state
that it was back when you last edited the files. That's not good! New
monitor or old, you really have to calibrate.
