I've been running the 13x19" i9100 printer with good but mixed results.
On the plus side, it's FAST. 13x19 full res in about 5 minutes. Seems a
little more solid construction than epsons and individual ink system is
great. The Canon RGB driver printed much better gradations and dark areas
than 1270-80 RGB driver and is about as good or better than the 2200 RGB
driver, IMO. Images are much more neutral than the epsons when using the RGB
drivers, again IMO. Profiles made with PM4.1.5 and TC9.18 with Spectroscan,
GTI D50, matte driver settings. Color accuracy of all printers is fairly
good and consistent between brands. Colorthink gamut of i9100 is much more
open in tough dark browns (skin, hair) than 1280 and yellow graphs quite
pure and saturated.
The bad news , for my printer at least, is the i9100 is not nearly as sharp
as the 1280 tested. The dithering on i9100 is visible and extra fine details
(like the blanket on the elephant statue in the PDI target at 4" wide) are
not clearly visible. The 1280 prints these fine lines no problem...just
takes 20x longer time. The i9100 is sharper than most offset press though.
There is also a bit of printhead banding in some areas of solid color,
sometimes. I'm not sure if the coarse-er dithering and banding are holdovers
from Canon s9000 or problems with the driver linked to a late i9100 rollout.
Our printer is intended for quick turn proofing of product photography. The
Canon inks didn't like Best proof paper 9150 with a max density of L:9 (Lab)
where my 3rd party dyes for the epson can hit L:5 . The i9100 does however
print well on Epson proofing semimatte paper with a L:6 for max density,
just shy of US sheetfed coated's L:5 . 3rd party dyes from MIS and
MediaStreet we've tried have not printed well on proofing semimatte or any
other epson papers.
The included Canon profile is interesting, if you can find it. It looks like
half LUT, half matrix. White and black are L:100 and L:0 and the PCS is XYZ
but the tag table contains A2B and B2A LUTs. I don't use it but it actually
prints fairly well sometimes and has a beautiful softproof ; )
I really like this printer despite the dithering and dye inks. Does anyone
know of a good rip that supports the i9100 with ink limits and ICC workflow?
The i9100 does have a factory supported rip...but I'm pretty sure it's a
Birmy.
