Philips has 2 different D50 bulbs for proofing applications. The
Colortone 50 is a T12 bulb (1.5" diameter), the same size and frequency
as the GE Chroma 50 Bulbs. The Philips TL-90 bulbs are T8 bulbs (1"
diameter) and operate at a higher frequency than the T12 bulbs. Because
they operate at a higher frequency they do not appear to "flicker" as
much as the other bulbs and do not fatigue your eyes as much. The T8
bulbs use different ballasts than the T12 bulbs.
I have used both the GE and the Philips bulbs in the past and have found
subjectively that I like the Philips better. The GE bulbs seem to have a
stronger blue cast to the light that is emmitted whereas the Philips
seem more neutral. The GE seemed to excite the optical/UV brighterners
in substrates more than the Philips did. The Philips Colortone bulbs
also cost less than the GE Chroma 50 bulbs (at least with the several
suppliers I checked with 2 years ago.) I ended up filling the entire
building with Philips Colortone bulbs so that wherever people looked at
proofs and color they would at least have the same illuminant, even
though surrounding walls, etc. would affect the viewing conditions.
I would be hesitant to use a non-fluorescent bulb as my primary standard
viewing condition in house. It is hard to fill a whole room (such as a
pressroom or large conference room) with non-fluorescent bulbs without
significant cost for fixtures, etc. Also, if I have a customer that
wants to create viewing conditions in their office similar to mine, I
can tell them what bulbs to get. Most people have fixtures/ballasts for
fluorescent bulbs.
My two cents,
