The Color Management Module in Windows 98 is not the same as the Color
Management Module in Windows 2000, nor was it built by the same company.
The entry level module in Windows 98 only supports eight 8 gridpoints
for low precision interpolations. The module in Windows 2000 is a
professional solution that supports +30 gridpoints for high precision
interpolations.
Among the ambiguities of the ICC Specification was that it originally
failed to specify the type of interpolation a device profile expected
the CMM to use, as well as leaving the number of gridpoints as an open
option. In this context higher gridpoint counts offered an additional
gamut safeguard. Eventually flags that directed CMMs to apply the
intended interpolation method were implemented by everyone, as far as I
am aware.

As with all software, Color Management Modules experience successive
upgrades. The CMM in Linocolor 6.0 for Mac OS Classic is earlier than
the CMM in Newcolor 2.5 for Mac OS X.
The CMM in LinoColor 6.0 for Mac OS Classic will yield the same result
as the LinoColor CMM in classic versions of the Mac OS from System 7.5
and ColorSync 2.0 through to System 8.5 and ColorSync 2.5.
Overall it is important that the professional CMMs compete on speed and
smoothness, but not on proprietary capabilities. We need to know that
high precision device profiles based on high precision measurements
produce the same color renderings, no matter what professional CMM is
used. In other words if there were discernible differences between the
professional CMMs, there would be real cause for concern.
