I've been using wrong terminology, sorry for the confusion. I use ACE to convert files to epson paper profiles before sending the files to the printer without any epson driver color adjustments. I've also tried letting the epson driver do the conversion. Both ways produce similar results only in the former I can see the banding in the shadows on the monitor. I don't think this is a mechanical problem (but thanks anyway Neil!) because it shows on the monitor. It feels like a profile issue, I was hoping to get away with canned profiles but perhaps that's wishful thinking.

I'll start with custom profiles before investing in "an alternative rip." :-) Thanks everyone for the input, this group is really helpful.

Regards,
Dave Robertson

Please correct me if I am misreading your post but you don't actually
say that you are currently sending your files to the 1270 via a Rip but
your terminology of "an alternative rip" suggests you are. I am assuming
you are actually using the standard driver and are considering a rip as
an alternative to this because of the banding problems you mention.
Could you please confirm your workflow as the answers will differ.

By the way I agree with Neil Snape that the Adobe Pressready rip was a
little beauty among the slim pickings available for desktop printers
such as the 1270 at the time it was produced. Unfortunately it did not
have ink limiting which would have made it even better, but possibly
getting away from the market and pricing for which Adobe intended. I did
however have some great success with this Rip in PhotoShop and being
able to control black generation cured problems with many images where
Epson's early black start on a printer, before the use of Light Black
ink, was undesirable. Interestingly I was most pleased with profiles for
this rip created with ColorVision's Profiler Pro. While some on this
list have criticised that package for its CMYK capabilities, I found
that used with its linearisation stage, that allowed adjustment of
PhotoShop's dot gain curves prior to profile creation, produced a great
result.
