I created the profile with Argyll (of course!), and no, I haven't used

It's a table based display profile. With one exception, basICColor
display, the table based display profiles I've seen do not assume the
display is gray balanced, post successful calibration.
Most of the packages are matrix and TRC based. When the TRCs are the
same for each channel, then R=G=B makes gray.
No it doesn't. Profiles contain more information that that which
could be used for determining the gray balance of a display.
Sorry, I'm not following the above statement. The point I'm trying to
make
is that it is not robust, nor are there any algorithmic advantages
that I'm
aware of, in designing a profiling algorithm that assumes a monitor has
perfect gray balance.
You get to make a matrix profile instead of a table based profile.
That's the advantage. And if the display is gray balanced, this works
quite well. It is in fact how the Artisan works. Not every display is
an Artisan, so yes it makes sense to a.) not change the display
behavior with limited 8-bit DACs in video cards; b.) record the actual
behavior, good or not so good, in a table based profile and compensate
for this behavior in the CMS.
But that most products don't do this doesn't mean they're bad and
should be avoided.
