Hi all,
I must admit to being a total newbie when it comes to color management,
so sorry in advance if I ask something stupid ... I have searched the
archives without success, maybe because I'm not even able to ask the
right questions ... :-/
I have no problems in understanding and applying color management to
monitors and scanners; however, I can't even come close to calibrate my
printer (a HP Color LaserJet 5500). That's bad, because the colors of
the printer are *way* off.
I *thought* I just would have to select a suitable ICC file in
ColorSync Utility > Devices > Printers > <myPrinter>. Not so.
1.) The first problem I encountered is that the ColorSync Utility
"Current Profile" button to choose a profile is disabled for Printers
(contrary to Displays) in my working (non-Admin) account, so I can't
change anything at all. It does work in an admin account, but then the
setting is only valid for this admin account, not the other accounts.
I suppose this is simply a bug in Panther, or do I misunderstand
something?
2.) So I changed to an admin account to go on testing. Here I could
change ICC files, but to no visible effect at all when printing. To be
sure that I don't overlook subtle changes I created a "totally weird"
ICC file in the Display Calibrator Assistant and selected it as my
printer ICC file. Still, nothing changes when I print.
So there seems to be something very basic I don't understand. I thought
I could select an appropriate ICC file in the Color Sync utility, and
this would influence all my prints, no matter from which application I
print. Is this wrong, or what else is my problem?
3.) I was surprised to find that ColorSync utility would let me select
only RGB ICC files, not CMYK ones; even an HP supplied CMYK ICC file
called "HP Color LaserJet 5500" isn't selectable (the panel beeps when
I try to choose it). I thought laser printers (as opposed to ink jet
printers) need CMYK calibration, not RGB?
Thanks for any insight!
Bye
Uli
