No-one's ignoring that we're talking about untagged data.
I have unfortunate news for you: there is LOTS of untagged data out
there in the world that everyone assumes is in sRGB. It's called
the Web. Yes it's sub-optimal that it's untagged. But it IS.
Assuming the display profile gives NO consistency when you're using
a machine with multiple displays. It gives you NO consistency when
you're using multiple machines. Etc, etc...
Assuming a standard profile will give consistency. Using sRGB as
that standard will provide compatibility with the web standards,
and allow ColorSync to do sensible things with a mixture of tagged
and untagged data.
I can't see how anyone could draw any different conclusion.
