Actually Apple's docs that came with the PowerBook specifically describe plugging in a powered monitor to wake the Powerbook from sleep as the method for using it with the cover closed. For normal use it lists three steps (in slightly edited form):

1. Turn on the external display

2. Connect the display cable to the PowerBook. Your PowerBook automatically detects the display

3. Adjust the resolution on the external display using the Displays pane of the System prefs.

That sounds like hot connecting to me. No where is shutting down, restarting, sleeping or logging out specified.
