I've tried a number of third party applications that claim to be
colorsync aware and they reliably screw up color when printing (but
get screen display right). There are enough of these that there must
be confusion among developers, not just users, about how ColorSync
works in MacOS X printing. I conclude that it either doesn't really
work or that Apple is failing to communicate how it works to
developers (and users). Or more likely, some of both.
I've just done a test starting with an Adobe RGB test image, a TIFF
file with embedded profile. Custom profile "A" has a default rendering
intent of Perceptual confirmed with GM Profile Editor and Chromix
ColorThink.
Photoshop 8:
1. Open image, embedded profile is honored.
2. Print w/Preview , set to custom profile "A" rendering intent
Perceptual, BPC is OFF.
3. Epson 2200 print driver set to No Color Adjustment.
Preview on Panther:
1. ColorSync Utility, set for printer/media the custom profile "A" as
the Current Profile.
2. Open image in preview (it looks the same as in Photoshop).
3. Print dialog, set to the same settings as with Photoshop except set
Color Management to ColorSync
The printed results are very noticably different. This is not something
I'd expect from just a CMM difference. The Photoshop 8 print looks
correct. The Preview print looks wrong, much lighter and greener. Not
sure what the deal is.
