I give up. I've been without a flatbed scanner for months now, and
the
expense of it POSSIBLY working with more fixes,
I have the same Saphir scanner as you, running under OSX 10.2 with an
Adaptec 2930CU card using Vuescan software.
The solution to your problem may be to get the free ROM upgrade from
Adaptec. It's a self-fit chip but they give good instructions. I have
an Iomega Zip and Nikon Coolscan III on the same SCSI chain and I have
never been able to make both scanners appear at the same time under
OSX. It appears to be a glitch with the SCSI2 of the Nikon and original
SCSI of the Saphir. Individually the scanners work fine with Vuescan
and it is seldom I need both. I still use Linocolour Elite for colour
balancing with its good ColorSync support. Vuescan gets better scans
from the Coolscan than Nikon's software.
Consequently I have another scanner on order, the Epson Perfection 3200
Photo, so that I can use both scanners in OSX. In Europe it is only
equipped with Silverfast SE which has no batch scanning support but
North America will get the 3200 Pro in March ($599) with full
Silverfast AI and IT8 targets. An upgrade is available from SE to AI
for 99 Euros net which is cheaper than importing the 3200 Pro from the
US. There is a "multiple photo scanning" option from Epson's software.
Looking at the 3200's specs it does seem light years ahead of the old
Saphirs - 3200x6400 resolution, 48 bit, 3.4D... but only a 9"x4" tranny
area so the Saphir will stay as well.
