You are 100% right : InDesign completely ignores grayscale profiles on
import. Same with version 2 and, according to my sources, don't expect
anything in version 3 either, due out this summer or early fall (my
estimates).
Come to think of it, AFAIK, Photoshop is the only application (other than
Gretagmacbeth iQueue and Helios) that does "color-manage" grayscale images.
It'd me nice to manage grayscale images in Illustrator also. But we might
have to wait even longer for that one.
