The thing about profile editing, especially profile editing using the
same package that was used to create the profile in the first place,
is that it's generally limited to improving some are of the color
reproduction at the expense of another area.
I'm confronted with a similar circumstance:
One particular media (pressure-sensitive vinyl) has been nearly
impossible to profile reliably with any of the three output profiling
packages I have available (ColorSynergy, CompassProfile, and
MonacoPROOF).
All seem to leave me with profiles that invariably map lower shadow
values - particularly flesh & wood tones - to an abrupt maroon or
birthmark coloration, when I'm looking for much smoother transitions in
areas of low saturation.
PROOF has provided the best profiles to date for other media (like
universal photo paper & polypropylene: I'm running an HP5000UV with the
ErgoSOFT RIP PosterPRINT) but still leaves me with embarassing shadows
on vinyl.
Is this a case of: 1.) no one profile fits most image ranges, or 2.) a
third-party profile editor (Like Kodak's ColorFlow, which I have but
haven't resorted to in a couple of years) is required to manipulate
original profiles to resolve small deficiencies, or 3.) for some media
& profile combinations it's necessary to adjust the image source to
better match the intended media + profile deficiencies?
