Using the PDI test image is a good idea, since it eliminates your scanner as
an element. The PDI isn't perfect in the grays and blacks, but it shows a
good range of colors.

If you insist on doing visual calibration the most controls are available in
ColorBlind ProveIt, but its complex, and tends to not get updated as
frequently as would be desirable.

Monitor calibrators are low enough cost these days that they are purchased,
not rented. Besides, you'll need to use it again at least once a month...
