Yes, its certainly possible to do color critical work on these displays.
Beware that the new 20 inch runs under OS X only, and that the 23 requires
very specific video cards to run under 9.2.2.

You've covered a fair amount of it: The LCD Spyder with OptiCAL (the upgrade
option would probably make this the most cost efficient for you), the EyeOne
with EyeOne software or Monaco software, or if you want something more in the
range of OptiCAL features, then with basICColor software. Or the new Sequel
sensor with Monaco Optix (again, only if you don't need advanced features) or
basICColor for a more full feature set. This last sensor appears to be more
tightly optimized for LCDs than CRTs; I'm not sure I could recommend it for a
CRT, but on the Apple LCDs under discussion it makes pretty comparable
profiles to the Spyder and EyeOne, if a bit rough at the dark end.
